Microbiology is the study of microorganisms including bacteria, yeast, molds, viruses, protozoa and other microscopic parasites. Two academic choices are available. The Bachelor of Science in Microbiology emphasizes microbial structure, function, and interactions and relationships with humans. (The links below provide information on the course requirements and a suggested plan of study for this degree.) The Bachelor of Science in Microbiology with an option in Microbial Ecology emphasizes microbial structure, function and interactions and relationships with the environment and other organisms including higher plants and animals. Students with either academic choice can continue their studies at the graduate level or in medical sciences, or seek careers in government, research or industrial laboratories.
