Dr. Matthias C. Rillig (Associate Professor of Microbial Ecology) Matthias (in picture below shown with daughter Jamina) is interested in the role of fungi in ecosystems, with an emphasis on the ecology of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Matthias was born in Speyer, Germany, and did his undergraduate work at Universität Kaiserslautern (Germany) and University of Edinburgh (Scotland). He obtained his Ph.D. in 1997 in Ecology from San Diego State University/ UC Davis, working with Mike Allen. After a postdoc at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, Department of Plant Biology (Stanford) with Chris Field, he moved to University of Montana. In Spring 2007 Matthias Rillig will join the faculty of the Freie Universitaet Berlin, Germany, as professor of plant ecology. Pedobiologia - International Journal of Soil Biology (Editor-in-Chief) For additional pictures of lab people click here.
Dan has a Ph.D. from University of Wyoming (2003) and is interested in spatial aspects of soil microbial communities, soil aggregation, and the use of molecular methods to address questions in microbial community ecology.
Mary has a Ph.D. (2006) from University of New Mexico, and she joined the lab as a postdoctoral research associate in October 2006. Her interests are in riparian ecology. Carl Rosier (Ph.D. candidate, Integrative Microbiology & Biochem, Microbial Ecol. option) Carl received his undergraduate degree from UC Santa Cruz, and joined the lab, coming from Bitterroot Inc.; he is interested in glomalin-related soil protein and other applied aspects of AMF. Carl is also interested in ecology and soils education.
Jeffrey Piotrowski (Ph.D. candidate, Integrative Microbiology & Biochem, Microbial Ecol. option) Jeff came to us in summer 2003 from University of Maine with a M.Sc. His Master's work was on Chytridiomycota. Jeff is interested in fungal biology and works on diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and also on a riparian chronosequence.
Daniel Warnock (Ph.D. student, Integrative Microbiology & Biochem., Microbial Ecol. option) Daniel joined us in Fall 2004 from University of Oregon, where he obtained his undergraduate degree. He is interested in effects of charcoal on soil fungi.
Sonia Purin (Ph.D. student, Integrative Microbiology & Biochem., Microbial Ecol. option) Sonia joined the lab in Fall 2006 with a Master's degree from UDESC Lages, Centro de Ciências Agroveterinárias, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Sonia has a CAPES/ Fulbright fellowship from the Brazilian government; she is interested in glomalin. ![]()
