Undergraduate Program

Microbiology is the study of microorganisms, including bacteria, yeasts, molds, protozoa, and other microscopic parasites.  Two options are available.  The Microbiology degree emphasizes microbial structure, function, and interactions and relationships with humans.  The Microbial Ecology option emphasizes microbial structure, function and interactions and relationships with the environment and other organisms including higher plants and animals.

Within the Microbial Ecology option, a student may approach their studies from either a Molecular/Physiological emphasis or an Ecological emphasis. These two options differ in the course work required. Four-year course plans are available here.

For questions about these emphases and the option, please consult the Undergraduate Advising Office in the Division of Biological Sciences at: biology.advisor@mso.umt.edu.

A key feature of the undergraduate courses in this option is the core course in Microbial Ecology, which features an off-campus field camp. In 2001 it was held at the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch in Montana with an emphasis on soil microbial ecology
