Section 5.1: Classes of Enzymes
- To better manage the large number of enzymes, they have been organized by the IUBMB into 6 main
categories, based upon the general kinds of reactions that they catalyze:
- Oxidoreductases (oxidation-reduction reactions)
- Transferases (transfer of a group from one molecule to another)
- Hydrolases (cleavage of a bond by water)
- Lyases (addition/removal of a double bond)
- Isomerases (intramolecular rearrangement)
- Ligases (joining of substrates using ATP)
